International MEPOST Project and VU IIRPS invites for the keynote lecture by professor Olivier Luminet on impact of emotions to individual and collective memory. What do we remember and why? The answer to this question is broad but at least one key aspect is strongly supported by the literature in psychology: when a situation is emotional, the probability that it will be retrieved is much higher. We will develop the explanatory factors for this effect, whether it is influenced by the valence (positive-negative) of the event, or when events reach a very high intensity of negative emotions (trauma). The keynote will examine the effect of emotional states both on individual and collective memories, illustrated by the well-known Flashbulb memory effect, which explains that we remember with high vividness and high confidence a large amount of contextual details such as where we were, with whom, and what we were doing. Olivier Luminet is the research director at the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research, professor in psychology at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) and associate professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium. Luminet’s research explores the intersections of emotion, identity, and memory at both individual and collective levels, with particular expertise in flashbulb memories, mechanisms of collective memory formation, and intergenerational transmission of memories related to political events. He was awarded as Fellow of the European Health Psychology Society in 2023 to recognize his contribution to the field of health psychology. ____________ The lecture will take place at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science, Vilnius University, Vokiečių st. 10, 402 auditorium on November 5th, 9:30.
